Pat pondered, "I have a 14 yo doing a fabulous job of
BF. I told her she could be teaching moms twice her
age :-) Is it because she is so young that she's not
all wound up in the do's and don'ts that preoccupy
most moms?"
I don't think so. I think some teen moms "get it" and
then have to struggle even more with support. My
first experience with a teen mom, also 14, was
wonderful. She was a fantastic mom but had a
difficult time with sufficient support from the
nursery staff at her high school. the dad was a felon
and dangerous, but she had excellent support from her
parents, and I supported her as I could. She was a
true inspiration but spoke with frustration about her
peers who were more interested in partying and clothes
than in caring for their babies. I recall at least 2
of her peers who gave their babies up for adoption
when thney were several months old and my neighbor
viewed that as lack of interest more than an inability
to care for the baby.
Sadly, 8 years later she is involved with another
felon and terrible things have happened to her and her
younger son, but I know that some teens can actively
buck the trends of their peers. but it takes strength.
