I had a fun consult today with a well educated couple. They had a copy of
BabyWise laying on the table, and kept talking about wanting to get their 5
day old on a schedule. They had two adorable Jack Russel terriers who were
living the life of Huck Finn: they had a dog door, and every 5 min. one or
the other would run outside and jump into the beautiful backyard pool and
swim around with great delight. They'd jump out, run back in, and jump up
on the lovely leather sofa and shake water over the mom, baby and me. While
friendly, the dogs were very determined to keep an eye on me to make sure I
was behaving myself. Everyone was totally indulgent of the dogs, with no
mention of trying to reform their unpredictible behavior. In fact, their
obvious exhuberence and unpredictability was part of their warm, wiggly
charm. As I was trying to gently describe how happy it makes babies to be
responded to, I got the idea to say: "Just treat your baby the same way you
treat your dogs!" Big lightbulb. Oh, yes! I get it. Just love, enjoy,
and respond to cues. Dad says: "I need to alter my expectations."
