Our breastfeeding rate was about 50% at the time (1997-early 1998) we were gathering information about starting a lactation program specifically in the NICU. After about 6-12 months of only one FTE (late 1999-2000) dedicated to the NICU, our rates hovered in the 85-95% range. Our NICU is licensed for 46 Level III beds and often holds 60+ babies. Just shows what a little support will do.... Maureen Allen RN, BSN, IBCLC, Brigham and Women's NICU, Boston, MA
