I give moms a list of tips I put together from a few different places in the
loop, shared by others. These are strategies for the working mom, not
specifically the caregiver although some tips are. They include using a
sling, going for a walk outside, and allowing pacifier use only at the
caregiver's.
I also give them a description of the "bottle-for-breastfeeding" technique
of bottle-feeding (that I originally got from Diane Weissinger) and address
the specific issue of babies taking amazing amounts of expressed milk at one
time. And I give them the LLLI handout on storing expressed milk.
If you send me your e-mail I am happy to share the ones I put together with
you.
A mom I once counseled was leaving her baby only a couple of hours a day to
get a break, feeding baby before leaving and immediately on return. Given
that short a break, perhaps the caregiver could avoid giving a bottle
completely. However, the baby was taking 9 ounces of expressed milk during
that 2 hour break! Mom called me wailing that she "couldn't keep up."
Diane, LLLL
