When we were working towards including LCs in our state health care
package, my best friend, a psychologist who worked with the chronically
mentally ill, made a good point.
She stated that the one-on-one time that a breastfeeding mother gives her
baby/toddler/little nursing person made a real difference for children of
mentally ill moms. Specifically, she mentioned a depressed mother who had
breastfed all her children, and nursed her youngest for three years.
"I would've thought it was some sort of abuse if I hadn't know you first and
seen you breastfeed your kids for so long. And when I looked at her kids, I
could see how centered they were. She may have been unable to give them much
of herself in many ways - but her body and her milk were always available,
and those kids were so stable and centered - not at all what we would have
expected."
Since she was "the boss" on that case, she was also able to tell all the
other support people who touched that mom's life to leave the breastfeeding
relationship intact. More than one of those people talked to me about this
experience later!
