To my horror my husband brought home the local paper an it had this as a
front page headline "Brothel offers breast milk." I am in Wellington New
Zealand who the government in their infinite wisdom have this month
decriminalized prostitution. I tried to find the article online to post
out but I cannot find it. Here is the essence of the article. A brothel
is promoting the fact that one of their mothers who has a 6 week old baby
is offering herself at a price to nurse grown men. "Brooke said that she
washed herself with hot salt water and showered before she nursed and did
not believe there was any risk of cross-linked infection. 'My kid comes
first.'" The reporter interviewed Rosemary Gordon the New Zealand LLL
director who raised concerns about herpes, hepatitis and TB for the infant,
mother, and clients.
ARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH! I need a little help on this one as well because the
same day this story broke I had sent out press releases about our world
breast feeding week activities so now the papers are asking for comments
from me. I have responded by saying it was unfortunate that this
sexualising of breastfeeding was exactly what we were trying to counteract
by our breastfeeding photographic arts exhibition and "caught you nursing"
program where Hutt Valley Breastfeeding Coalition members find women
breastfeeding in public and reward them with a small certificate and a
coupon for a beverage for themselves from a local cafe. The caught you
nursing program was started after coalition members became outraged after
one of the members had a man come up to her and tell her that she should be
paid to expose herself like that in public. Any intelligent commentary on
this would be helpful.
