Just an observation over 25 years of doing breastfeeding consulting. I
have had a surprising (to me) number of mothers over the years mention to
me in the course of conversation - "I would never tell my doctor this...
but my sister, girlfriend, etc. and I nurse each other's babies if we're
babysitting for each other. My baby is hungry, I nurse. Her baby is
hungry, I nurse." They are not looking for my approval or permission to do
this, they just matter-of-factly state it to me. And my response is "Good
for you!". I've come to the conclusion that this practice is probably a
lot more common than anyone suspects. And I certainly don't blame women
for not talking about it - after all look what happens when it comes to
light. Obviously, I feel that wet nursing should be mutually consensual.
By the way, I live and practice in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago and the
women I work with are middle-class average suburban women.
