Teresa's suggestion of having more people to do good research seems like a
logical conclusion in regard to this situation. But I have a different
viewpoint after seeing the list of the many patents on human milk and cancer at the US
Patent & Trademark Office (over 300). I think the research is being done but
is not being given any public acknowledgement because the impact would hit a
few pocketbooks--such as the drug, infant formula, and vaccine industries.
Interesting how the media has been dragging up these breastfeeding studies that
are looking at the 70's and early 80's. Pat said it well, when she
commented, "were kids actually breastfeed in the US between 1972 & 1981." Remember the
asthma study by Dr. Malcolm Sears et al? His study was looking at
breastfeeding during this time period and it showed that breastfeeding was not
protective against asthma. I believe there was another study-diabetes?--same time
period. Now this cancer study....As Barb mentioned on this list what is their
definition of breastfeeding. But more importantly, why are these studies so
readily publicized and quoted? Who owns the media? Certainly not the
breastfeeding advocates.

This particular patent is called "Secreted mac-2-binding glycoprotein,"
inventors being Koths, et al. and the assignee being Chiron Corporation (rather
interesting that they own this patent) which was filed in 1995. The protein they
call gp85-97 will be used to treat cancer. This protein is in breastmilk,
obviously in varying amounts. This is one of 300 or more patents that use
components of human milk to treat cancer. I have previously mentioned that the Mayo
Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida is using HMFG-1 (human milk fat globule)
bound with a radioactive material 90 Yttrium to treat ovarian cancer. I no longer
wonder why the media publishes these biased studies. Obviously, the control
of the media is in the hands of multi-corporations who do not want the public
to know how valuable human milk is.

patent # 6069127
"A fourth object of the invention is the description of medical diagnostics,
preferably antibody in nature, for determining the concentration of gp85-97
protein in biological fluids, which information can be predictive of the health
status of an individual including the susceptibility of the individual to
disease. A preferred application is in monitoring the concentration of gp85-97
protein in human milk to determine if an infant is receiving the appropriate
amount of this protein for maximum health benefit.

A fifth object of the invention is a composition consisting of infant
formulas supplemented with gp85-97 protein, either recombinant or the purified native
protein, that can be fed to an infant in need of the medical benefit afforded
by the protein.

A sixth object of the invention is the presentation of methods of treating
cancer, preferably breast cancer, consisting of administering the molecule in
amounts effective to treat the cancer.

A seventh object of the invention is a method for treatment of infectious
diseases in a patient, preferably those caused by pathogens that colonize nasal
passages or intestinal epithelium, consisting of administering to a patient in
need of such treatment a therapeutically effective amount of gp85-97 and a
pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

These and other objects of the invention will become apparent upon reading
the following description of the invention."
