As a staff RN in a few different hospitals over the years that have all given out the formula gift bags, whenever I have questioned this practice with the RN's in charge of OB they have all responded with something similar to "We'll never be able to get rid of those". They've given me the impression that it is out of their hands?? I've wondered who makes the decision to contract with the formula companies to give those out-is it them and they are just deflecting blame or is someone else responsible? I've seriously thought about taking the issue "higher up" but I do feel my job might be threatened. I don't think most hospitals would want their conflict of interest (saying they support breastfeeding but advertising and endorsing a product that if used means breastfeeding is not occurring) to be discussed publicly (a letter to the editor of the newspaper comes to mind) as it would make them appear to have the wrong priorities (they do) but it may bring about some changes in longstanding practices. I'm anxious to hear what some of you have done to bring about change in nonbaby-friendly settings.
