I just got a call from an out-of-town woman with 5 month old twins. The
girl is gaining normally, is fine, and would be happy to nurse any time.
The boy gains faster than normal and is chronically uncomfortable.
He had a tongue-tie snipped at 3 1/2 weeks. He tends to stool infrequently
and acts constipated. He nurses every 2-4 hours, never for long and never
for comfort. He's just generally a fitful, not-quite-happy baby.
If he were a single, we'd be talking about oversupply. But his sister does
fine. They each have their own side, but switch every few weeks.
I saw a video of Cathy Genna's in which a chubby, fussy, marginally
tongue-tied baby swallowed a gazillion times without a pause. He gained
control once the tongue-tie was addressed. So I've suggested this mom
revisit the tongue issue in her own baby, comparing him with his sister in
terms of how well he can control the flow, how he sucks on finger and
breast, and generally what kind of tongue mobility he has.
A while ago, the mom tried a week without dairy, with no improvement. But
she substituted soy for dairy, so is going to try it again without either
one.
She's ordered lactase drops and is going to try giving them to him directly
before nursing. And I suggested she try encouraging more frequent nursings,
to try to slow the flow and increase the fat.
I've suggested chamomile or ginger tea for her, as a stomach-settler for
him, and I even wondered about cabbage on just "his" side.
What else would you do? I'm off to ILCA, but will share replies with his
mom when I get back.
