We also used to pick up babies and bring them to the nursery for MD rounds by pediatricians. And this was always at 0630, at change of shift UGHHHH! We stopped doing it with the support of our nurse manager. Citing HIPAA (many parents in the nursery at once) and security reasons (babies not in parents rooms as policy states), we made a cute little cart with otoscope, opthalmascope, tongue depressors, cotton wipes, measuring tape etc anything you can imagine and left enough room to store all the babies charts and just brought the charts to this cart and had it ready for the pedi's. They were also prepared by our nurse manager that this would be implemented for the babies and nurses sake, and because the mothers want it. Well as you can imagine it didnt go 100% but it did go over about 60% and then we just kept doing it and now (6 weeks later) its expected %100. Alot nicer. Of course circs are still done in the nursery, but now that medicaid does not reimburse for that we sure
are doing only about 40-50% now instead of 95% circs. Which I bring up, not to start an arguement, but to be excited about less separation of mom and baby postpartum!
Now if I can just train the nurses to be comfortable doing hearing screens, weights, and assessments in the mom's room instead of the nursery. Only about 50% of the nurses insist on this but gradually I and others are showing them it can be done.
We also told the doctors how much the moms were pleased this was implemented and how they thought it was a big bonus for our floor. And how much they enjoyed seeing the pediatrician in their room etc. I know this is alot of "fawning" for the MD but whatever works!!!!
Maybe it will work for others too?

This is a disturbing post. The babies should have been out with their
mothers breastfeeding. Truly disturbing.
