Laurie, I just don't know the answer to this. Unless a mom comes to me just
to rent a pump and there is no "consult" involved other than teaching her how
to use the pump, I've ALWAYS sent a consult letter to the physician/midwife of
record. I've been in practice for 18 years, and think it is important to do
so. I work FOR a group of pediatricians as their LC, and whenever I see one
of 'our' babies in my office, I send a note -- even if it just a weight check.
It goes on the baby's chart.
I've been fascinated by all the discussion on this issue, particularly from
folks that are in other cultures. I suspect that IBCLCs who work in WIC
clinics don't send reports to physicians; I would wonder if IBCLCs who work in
lactation clinics in hospitals routinely write & send consult letters to physicians
when they see moms on an outpatient basis. I don't know -- and it may be
different in different hospitals/WIC clinics.
Perhaps I've made some assumptions based on lectures I've heard from JoAnne
Scott years ago, and from reading the infamous # 23. I know we had discussions
on this when I was on the IBLCE board and on the ILCA board -- but hey folks,
I'm a Golden Oldie -- I was on those boards 10 years ago, and now that we are
a more well established profession, perhaps things have changed. Or, perhaps
they SHOULD change????
I too am hoping we'll get some input from the IBLCE after their meeting. I
hope they'll have time to address this issue. I don't think we need to worry
about whether or not there will be an international perspective -- keep in mind
that the current Prezzie of IBLCE is from the land of Oz (and probably loves
Vegemite!)
