Getting a baby on the breast quickly after a C-Section is not done frequently
in our hospital. It is possible. I did it with my friend within 45 minutes.
We have one nursery nurse who tries very hard to do so. But most of the
nurses feel they are too busy to be able to leave the nursery and stay with a Mom
who is not 100% "with it". A lot of the Dads are staying with the Mom or
maybe her mother is present but the nurses are so busy (over 400 births per month
at our hospital) they just don't make it the priority that they should. If
the Mom and Dad don't speak up and the "wrong" nurse is working that day....it
could be hours before the baby gets to the breast. I think I was able to
demonstrate that it is possible to get the baby to the breast, save the bath for
later, and keep a baby warm all within less than an hour. But not much has
changed since then. It is frustrating. If the parents would only get themselves
educated this is what would change things!
