Since I don't know the influences expectant parents bring to the
prenatal class, I avoid referring to any of the "bad" books by
name. What I do instead is, while discussing books and showing
several rather good ones, point out that there are some parenting
books out there that seem to "guarantee" results and present
parenting with a "one size fits all" approach. I warn them to be
wary of books that fit either of these descriptions. I talk about
how each baby and each mom/baby couplet is individual. Just because
an approach works for some parents or even worked with a particular
parents previous child(ren) doesn't mean it will work for and is
appropriate for this current baby. On occasion someone will ask
specifically about BW, or I may see it in a room when visiting new
moms. If the parent asks for an opinion, I will tell them that
there are some real concerns with the approach and some infants have
had problems when parents felt they had to make their baby "fit the
mold".
Since the idea of baby "snacking" at breast gets such a bad rap in
these books, I have changed my phrasing. Instead I state that while
sometimes baby may want an entire 10-course dinner, at other times
he is looking for a light meal or maybe only quenching tis thirst.
This also leads easily into a discussion of "fore" and "hind" milk
with the former being the "thirst quencher" and the latter being the
"brain food".

Winnie
