I have recently seen an exclusively breastfed, full term baby whose stool
pattern changed at 2 weeks. Mum was very concerned that her baby was
constipated or there was something else wrong as the baby had not had a
bowel motion for 5 days (from 16 days old). Despite reassurances that her
baby was thriving, gained 400 grms a week and passes lots of wind and flatus
and urine she saw her paediatrician who prescribed suppositories for
constipation. Now the baby is 6 weeks old and settled into a pattern of
passing a stool every 3rd day and mum can see this is normal for her baby. I
am a newly qualified LC and have only seen babies who have a change in stool
pattern at around 4 weeks and wondered how common it is for the stool
pattern to change before 4 weeks. I would like a little insight please!
