Laurie,
I don't know if Lisa Marasco is no mail on Lactnet right now, but her work
suggests goat's rue may be beneficial. However, I don't know if it is safe
for use during pregnancy. Another medication (not herbs) that is promising
is the use of metformin. However, as a part of discussing herbs/medications
with IMS moms, I'm encouraging them to get hormonal profiles done to try to
figure out why they are not making milk. This won't work during pregnancy,
I guess, but pp am asking them to have their thyroid function, prolactin,
progesterone & testosterone levels checked.
http://www.obesity-news.com/absmet.htm Not bf related, but a good synopsis
of metformin use in insulin resistance, PCOS, obesity, etc. (which is often
what is going on w/IMS mothers).
USE OF METFORMIN TO INCREASE BREASTMILK PRODUCTION IN
WOMEN WITH INSULIN RESISTANCE: A CASE SERIES. Mona
Gabbay, M.D.,* Heather Kelly, IBCLC.
This study of 9 women was presented at the Academy of Breastfeeding
Medicine, but I don't know if it's been published yet.
Warmly,
Anna Swisher, MBA, IBCLC
