I teach pretty much the same, depending on when I see them (i.e. day 1 or
day 4). If I see a mom who is going through engorgement, with a yellow,
sleepy baby, I really stress compression and massage of breasts with that
other arm. I find that moms do a better job of compression and massage if
they're not putting their hand between the baby's chest and their breast.
That also tends to push the baby's chin away, even when I emphasize keeping
their fingers to the chest wall. It just doesn't seem natural to them, they
say. Of course, if I have a family like I did today, Dad offers to do the
compression and massage and I show mom how to get comfortable as Dee
explained.
