This has just recently been an issue where I work (level III). Until a few
weeks ago, we purchased Ross lids and used the "free" volufeeds for mothers
pumping for NICU babies, and sterile water bottles for those mothers still
in-house. The cost of purchasing is too high for volufeeds so we are
switching to a sterile container that looks just like a urine specimen
container, holds four ounces, for a fraction of the price. We did buy a few
boxes of the Ross breastmilk storage bottles to carry us over until the new
supplies arrive, but they are also pricey. The down side of all this is the
milk must be pumped into a bottle and transferred to a sterile container,
rather than the efficiency of pumping directly. Also, when the milk is fed,
then the milk is transferred either to a syringe for a gavage feed or a
volufeed for bottlefeedings. My understanding is that the sterile specimen
container costs about 0.16 cents, while the volufeed is over 0.50 each.
The Ross breastmilk storage bottles are approx. 0.53 each. One thing that
we were told is that Ross is maximized on the production of volufeeds, and
that is why they are reducing distribution. I really do not mind that we
are buying containers, it is just one less thing that lactation is
"beholden" to the formula companies for.
