I'm pretty sure a barium swallow can be done at the breast. THe nipple
is coated with barium, and when the milk comes out, it mixes with the
barium and becomes radio-opaque. Another possibility would be to use
barium in a supplementer, but the tubes would have to be huge, and the
increased flow might actually create swallowing problems where none exist.
One very good indicator of a swallowing problem is when a bf baby
becomes increasingly congested during a feeding, as milk is aspirated
and takes up space in the airway. Repeated respiratory infections is
another.
