Once you have CMV you are a life-long carrier and excrete CMV in your urine,
saliva and breastmilk intermittently for the rest of your life. It is NOT
just active, symptomatic CMV that is the problem - it is the silent
excretors. Also, we used to think that congenital CMV could only occur if
Mom had CMV for the first time while pregnant - not true. Reactivation CMV
can also cause congenital infection.
Dr. Sharpe is absolutely right - CMV would not be a problem if, like the rest
of the world, we acquired it as (full term) infants or children. Also, my
virologist (who did much of the early work with CMV) says it is the
freeze-thaw cycle which kills the CMV because it kills the WBC. There is no
magic to 24 vs. 48 vs 72 hours of freezing.
