I have spent months going throught this same issue.  When I investigated
our sterile specimen containers, the manufacture told me they were made of
polyuretane.  When you read about the hazards you'll want to back off using
them because the chemicals can leach into the non-food storage container.
The company said they never intended milk to be stored in them. Most of
those products are used in insulation and building products.  We stopped
using sterile specimen container about 4 months ago.  I agree that it is
the cost that led us to use volufeeds while we search for a better
product.  However, everytime I open one, the smell turns me off and I
wonder if it is a good idea to put our precious EBM in something that
smells so chemical.  I asked my nurses who were friendly to the company rep
to take their morning coffee and pour it into a volufed.  Not too many
liked that idea because of the chemical smell.  I talked to the rep for
that company and he didn't have an answer. I don't like the idea of using
them for both reasons, smell of the container and being link to the company
because we need the container.  I have been looking again at bags of some
sort and their potential for use in short term in our SCN.  An article in
the Candian Journal of Allergy and CLinical Immunology 1998 by D. Beezhold
says in their studies, that polyethylene containers don't affect SIgA
levels. But this study was supported by a grant from Playtex. I did like
the Pumpmate storage liners (there have been other comments about them.
They are thicker than most liners, are easy to use and store, but the cost
is not a good option for us or our clients that are primarily on
assistance.  So I'll be interested in any new ideas here as well.
