This young man's letter shows exactly why we need more, not less, public
breastfeeding. This young man considers breasts fit for pornography but
not their natural function of producing food. If children were raised
in a culture where breastfeeding was common, they would grow up with a
healthier attitude.

Bottles have disadvantages. Why should a mother increase her child's
risk of crooked teeth, sleep apnea, speech difficulties (see
www.brianpalmerdds.com) just to avoid momentarily exposing an inch of
her skin as her baby latches on? Why should she feed her
immunologically immature child in a bathroom, full of germs from
people's excrement? The reason we have bathrooms is to keep potentially
infectious body wastes safely segregated from the living and eating
environment.

Even with urination, young children are allowed to "break the rules" and
have imperfect self control. No one complains if a little child
urinates in public, because everyone understands that waiting for a
bathroom might be impossible for a toddler. Adults are expected to have
better control. In the same way, infants cannot be expected to wait for
their meals. They burn calories very fast, and need to be fed often.
Breastfeeding is the biologically normal way for young children to be
fed. Just as our culture of junk food needs to change for our health,
so does our culture of shame and titillation around women's breasts.

Finally, coming to realize that other peoples needs are at least as
important as one's own comfort is an important part of growing up.
