I have reading Lactnet for a couple of months and am intrigued by the
quality of the postings so far. As such, I am delighted to be able to
respond (finally) to a posting. I recently completed a position/research
paper for a nursing course at the university of Alberta that focused on
breastfeeding by adolescent mothers. If you are interested, I could post
my reference list (which was extensive) as well as some of the highlights
of my research. The basics are: breastfeeding by adolescents is not
contraindicated but this population of mothers requires support and
interventions that are in common with other populations (i.e., correct
positioning, latching) but that accounts for their unique developmental
needs. Not a huge surprise but I found quite a few interesting findings
and practical suggestions related to breastfeeding promotion and
support.
Sincerely,
Dru Antoniuk
