Might this be coxsackie virus?  I had a mom who had nasty looking fissured
areas on her nipples, not that painful for her, and it turned out her older
son had cocksakie virus, which was transferred to her and also her newborn.
The newborn had blisters in his mouth.

Incubation period is 5-6 days and duration seven days (according to Dr Sear's
Baby Book).  I can't recall her nipple outcome but could look it up if no one
else has any comments on treatment.
