Anne Grider asks that we be more specific about breastfeeding and the
variants between that and feeding artificial breastmilk substitutes by
bottle.
Here on LN 'breastfeeding' pretty reliably means 'feeding the baby mother's
own milk directly from her breast'.
Feeding expressed breastmilk is usually called that, with the method
specified (gavage, finger feeding, SNS, cup, syringe, bottle).
Bottle feeding is usually further embellished by specifying what is being
given in the bottle.
We've had a few rounds about 'exclusive breastfeeding' vs. 'feeding
exclusively breastmilk' too.
I guess out in the real world things are less clear. And I have noticed
that mothers who are exclusively pumping and fully nourishing their babies
with their own milk, don't see it as a positive thing to be classified as
'not breastfeeding'. Maybe we should have a term that reflects the enormous
effort they devote to supplying their children with their milk without the
convenience of direct transfer from point of production to point of
consumption. It can't possibly be 'convenience' that drives women to do
this; I think it is more tied to that sense of loss that often arises when
the child manages without its mother's milk. I don't have any suggestions
for such a term. Do any of you?
