Not at all a scientific study, just my own experience with these dressings,
WITH very sore nipples. My youngest child (b. 10/99) has a tight labial
frenum, and was never able to flange her upper lip properly (still can't.)
I became sore shortly after her birth and remained in some discomfort for
the entire nursing period (which is not over yet!)
A few weeks after her birth, I had had cresent shaped scabs on both nipples
for a few weeks and some intense pain. I had been sent some hydrogel
dressings (am I allowed to say the name S--thies?) to "test." around the
time the baby was born. I assumed the "testing" was to be on my clients. I
called the 800 number to get data and I was told by the company they could
be worn "up to two or three days" at a time or until saturated, when I
asked for info on infection and efficacy rates, I was sent more adverts.) I
called the company three times to get saftey and efficacy information about
the dressings. I was repeatedly promised "research" and sent nothing but
adverts. I was not going to give them to clients with no clinical data
available.
So, in the name of science, I tried them on myself.
I do experience OMER. After approximately 3 hours (and two nursings) the
dressings were completely swollen, soaked and clammy. They smelled
differently than when I removed them from the package. I can only describe
it as "sour milky." I put them back on, but the discomfort was starting to
be worse than the soreness. I, personally, had no relief from soreness
while use. (Granted it was only about three hours.) So I removed them for
good. They appeared to weigh about twice what they had when taken out of
the package, in only three hours time.
I went back to loading on Lansinoh (no financial interest in product) (of
course while continuing to work on Hannah's lip flanging ect) and Motrin. I
was much happier and had less pain with the Lansinoh.
For what it is worth. My 2 c.
