If you didn't pee or wash your hands or eat a meal, and you were wafted
instantly from one mom to the next, you had 18 minutes and 27 seconds with
each patient on average. This is about an hour to an hour and a half short
of the time that a full-scale lactation consultation requires, according to
recent posts on Lactnet, and your manager is just plain crazy. (Though for
all I know, not unusual.) What is this--a hospital, or an assembly line
for packaging chicken parts?
We have such a small hospital that it's a fluke if I see two moms
back-to-back, so this is not an issue for me. If I need to see a mom for 2
hours during her hospital stay and again for an hour on 3 other occasions,
even if it's mostly for reassurance and practicing latch, no one questions
it. It's a free service to moms who deliver here, and they can come in as
often as they need to (I am not allowed to make home visits).
