Dear All,
I am currently no-mail so ask you to forward any replies to my home e-
mail: ladyjane@netvision.net.il...thanks
My daughter, 34 year old with 4 children, youngest being 2 months old, was
diagnosed 10 days ago with Multiple Sclerosis. She has already completed
the initial steroid treatment and using supplements of donated (dairy free)
breastmilk, managed to get through those 6 days and is now back to full
breastfeeding.
I am now seeking definitive answers for her regarding the continued
treatment she will need with disease modifying drugs. She will most
probably be starting off with Avonex but any of the other drugs, including
Copaxone may be possibilities...we do not know yet.
She is quite disturbed by the fact that she may have to stop breastfeeding,
more so as a matter of fact, than by the idea that she has MS, but without
a definitive "YES" regarding these medications, it will be very difficult
for her to continue breastfeeding due to enormous pressure from her husband
and his family. The fact that she has continued until now has caused quite
some problems within the family (not her husband...he is fine...but needs
to know for sure that BF is OK), and I promised that I would get all the
necessary information for her before her next consultation at the MS center
where she will be treated.
Most of what we have read on the internet states definitely NO to BF,
although some places have noted that the amounts that would be secreted in
BM are insignificant, so "proceed at your own discretion". This is not
enough for them...I am currently away from home and do not have access to
my own information, and while doing a quick Lactnet search, did not find
any definite info to give her. I am writing this from the hospital public
computer and doing searches is quite difficult as there are always lines of
people waiting to use the computer.
I appreciate any information you can forward to me asap regarding these
medications. The doctors are very willing to learn anything new, and were
quite pleased to learn that she could continue breastfeeding follwoing the
steroid treatments...but all information must be referenced etc. (They even
made arrangements for husband and baby to sleep with mom in the hospital
and spend as much time as possible with her to facilitate continued
breastfeeding once they realized how important it was to her emotionally,
not to mention that fact that granny is a lactation consultant!)
Thanks
Jane Abramowitz
