A mother contacted me about painful lumpy breasts following weaning of a 2 y. 10 mo. old child. It has been 2 months since she weaned. Breasts have gone down in size and aren't swollen. The mother has been to a mammologist. They checked her hormones and did an ultrasound. Everything seems to be fine according to the doctor. He says this condition can last for some time and offered pain relief.

I have suggested the mother seeks second opinion and possibly investigates mastitis.

Is this common? Should the mother in fact seek another opinion or she got qualified help? She doesn't know where to get second opinion or if is going to make difference, but at the same time is not happy with just pain relief and no explanation of her condition. What areas might be explored? What other comfort measures can she use?

Thank you,
Natalie Wilson.
