The information on Depakote and Depakote ER should be similar, except the
Depakote ER is an Extended Release preparation, and if there is an adverse
effect in the nursing child, the mother would have to stop breastfeeding for
a longer time to clear the drug from her blood before making a decision on
what step to take next.
Depakote has a 1/2 life of 1-4 hours. Depakote ER has a half life of 7-14
hours. All Depakote preparations are considered "safe" for use while
breastfeeding.
