I don't work in a NICU but thought I'd put this idea forward for
consideration.  Moms who have a positive drug screen at birth have babies
with a positive drug screen.  It may be kinder to the baby to let them get
mom's breastmilk than to not.  These babies go through withdrawals post
birth if there mom has been using during pregnancy.  Helping the mother to
get off and stay off the drugs while she is breastfeeding her baby may be
best for all concerned.  I realize not every woman with a drug
habit/addiction/at-risk behaviors does but many of them DO clean up for
their baby when they haven't been able or willing to do so for themselves.
For many of these moms it takes the actual baby to do so.  Pregnancy isn't
*real* enough for them.
