Subject: Milk supply...is it really the issue?
Mary,
I too read and don't post much to Lactnet, but found myself instantly needing to reply to you over your issue. The weights that you gave don't jive. If the baby's birthweight was indeed 7# and the baby was up to 7#5 by day 11, that is a very good gain! Then to drop 8 oz over night and then gain 6oz again over night, I'd really wonder about the accuracy of the scale being used. The baby was back to birth weight before 2 weeks ( a couple of times!). Are we sure this Mom just wasn't reacting with such anxiety with all the weight checks, and probable negative feed back from the physician, that she stopped letting down?
You mentioned that the output dropped off after day 8, but no details. I don't always find that when a woman can't pump much, especially when nursing so frequently, that it necessarily means anything. Some women just don't let down well to a pump, especially initially and especially if they're over wrought with worry about supply. Is this Mom getting any sleep? Is she eating well?
