Cathy's comment reminds me of the book, "Women's Ways of Knowing" (Belenky
et al). The authors describe 5 different ways in which women gather
knowledge. One way, "received knowledge", is typical of some college
freshmen who are discovering, to their great excitement, that there's
knowledge out there and they're capable of absorbing it.

But they tend to think there are "right" answers to be learned, and that all
knowledge is in agreement. When asked what she would do if two of her
professors disagreed, one such learner looked confused, then responded,
"They wouldn't."

Think of all the controversies and unknowns in human lactation! Think of
all the presenters who appear to have the right answers! And then imagine
the breastfeeding specialist who is a "received knower" and a disciple of
only one such person or course.

Our information keeps conflicting and changing. I think the only way we can
really get a sense of that conflict and change is to listen to a lot of
unrelated voices, and to keep listening.
