I worked with a mom who had a wonderful gastroenterologist who worked with
her to maintain breastfeeding and sort out the allergies from there. It
took 6 full weeks from her last taste of any bovine protein for the blood to
stop. She had to read labels carefully and she had to give up red meat. She
was very willing to do this because she knew it was best for her baby. It
made it easier to have a supportive physician who also knew the value of
breastmilk. The "I don't eat dairy" comment from a mom needs to be evaluated
to be sure she understands all the sources of dairy she may be eating in her
processed foods and that for some babies it also means no red meat.
