I'm a hospital based LC in Pennsylvania and just received information from our NICU that they are going to require their nurses to wear gloves when handling breast milk, (mixing, pouring, etc) They claim this is recommended by OSHA Blood born Pathogen Standard. They also stated that the use of gloves when assisting with breastfeeding or feeding breast milk from a bottle was not addressed. Sure hope they don't go that route!! I was under the impression that gloves were not needed to handle breast milk unless perhaps one works in a milk bank. I am not familiar with this standard. If any of you have information on this or know where I can find it, I would greatly appreciate your input. You may post on list or e-mail me privately. Thanks so much.
