I have mom's permission to post. Mother was seen by an IBCLC within a few
days after delivery because she had severe pain nursing her first child.
At that time nursing was going well, her baby had a suck that was within in
normal limits. She had received antibiotics during delivery and
subsequently developed a yeast infection. At that point in time she
developed severe nipple pain and the IBCLC reported that her baby had
started clamping. She was initially treated with diflucan and her baby was
treated with nystatin drops as well as had numerous sessions with the IBCLC
to improve her latch on technique. This reduced the pain levels to 3 on a
0-10 scale. Since then has been through many courses of treatment for the
yeast infection: diflucan for 3 months, Dr. Jack Newman's protocol,
acupuncture (which made her feel better able to cope, but did not decrease
pain) and more recently a steroid cream recommended by a dermatologist that
did not help and was discontinued. Her pain has remained at a level 3 and
her baby is now 5 months old. I do believe she did try a sugar/yeast
elimination diet as well.

Any suggestions? She plans on continuing to nurse regardless of the pain,
but did want to know if there was anything else she should try.
