I continue to struggle with JDGI (just don't get it) at work and the
latest, which I'm sure others have heard, is "We can't consider Baby
Friendly. We're supportive of breastfeeding, but with the whole
Baby Friendly thing, bottle feeding moms aren't supported and they
feel like they are being made to feel guilty."

Now I certainly don't need any arguments to the contrary. I've
tried them all. What I would like to hear from those of you who
work at Baby Friendly facilities is - What is your feedback from
bottle feeding moms? What percentage still bottle feed after
getting the certification? Have you heard of any women choosing
another hospital because yours is BFHI certified and the other
isn't? Do you have any statistics on women who choose your hospital
because it is BFHI?

The big issue here is "market share". With every hospital upgrading
OB (and all Women's Health Services), everyone is hoping to grab a
bigger piece of the pie, so I can understand the fear of doing
anything that might shift people to other facilities. I just think
BFHI would have the opposite effect. I know other hospitals in the
area are working toward B|FHI and will, of course, be one of the
first to point out if we lose any market share in conjunction with
that, but it would be great if I could have some evidence before
then.

TIA

Winnie
