Well put, Janice.  We are really advocates for the baby.  Who else
speaks for what the baby would want?  With lots of emphasis on
Family Centered Care, much is what mom and dad want with noone
speaking for baby.  Don't get me wrong, we should do everything we
can to meet the parent's needs, but let's not leave baby out.
That's what the parent-centered parenting programs do.  Our job, as
I see it, is to speak up for baby so his/her needs are given at
least equal weight to that of the parents in making decisions about
various aspects of baby care, family priorities, etc.  Then we work
to help parents meet baby's needs in ways that they can, hopefully,
meet their own needs also or at least be willing to put those needs
second to baby's more immediate needs.
