Hi Ann,

I have also been interested in approaching schools in my community with this
curriculum. I sent off an e-mail to the NYS Health Dept asking about the
program and where it is being used. Here is the response, in part, that I
received:

" It was developed jointly by

this department and the State Education Department almost ten years ago,

working with two experienced school teachers (both nursing mothers) who did

most of the writing. Unfortunately, I am not aware of any school districts

that have adopted it. Because people sometimes regard breastfeeding as a

sensitive subject, local grass-roots efforts to educate decision-makers at

the local school district level are key to having the curriculum adopted.

Last fall, we wrote to all of the breastfeeding networks around New York

State to encourage them to promote the curriculum's use in school districts

in their areas. "

I plan on discussing this with our local breastfeeding network and also
sending some letters to the local school districts to see if I can get any
positive response. I've been thinking about this for awhile....thanks for
your post that lit the fire under me!
