I absolutly agree with you.  there is quite a difference between how things
could work more effiecently in a hospital and give better care to the
mothers if we as lactation consultants were used as consultants.  the
nurses (i am also a nurse) should be held to a standard ,to work in the
hospital with nursing mothers, to give them the best care and information
and assistance you can.  it should be evidence based practice and not the
way the individual nurse may want to teach or what she believes or her way
of doing it.  i work in a very big hospital with approximately 8500
deliveries a year and we only have 3 ibclc's plus our secretary/office
manager is now ibclc.  as you stated so well since there are so few of us
we should be used for the difficult or problem situation and teaching.
hopfully i will one day see such a change.
