(This sat in my "drafts folder" while working out a bug in our
computer - sorry a little past the topic, but I think still
relevant)
Nikki makes a good point about there being some value in new moms
sharing a room. Privacy is a big issue in our culture and I don't
see it going back to multiple rooms. We just finished a brand new
unit with lots of neat features including private refrigerator and
private TV VCR in each room. What is missing, in my opinion, is a
place for moms to get together. The "nutrition center" where you
can get a snack or something to drink (and take more back to your
private fridge so you don't have to make more than one trip) is a
narrow walk-through design which doesn't lead to any interacton with
anyone else there. I really wish there had been a central location
in the unit where you could not only grab a snack, but sit down to
enjoy it and interact with other new mothers. There was a time when
the "evening snack" was distributed in a larger "moms' lounge" and
it was a chance to chat. Now the only time moms can interact with
each other is if they have a baby in NICU and are there at the same
time or if they happen, in the hall, to run into someone they know
or met in childbirth class while walking to and from the coffee
machine. As in so many situations, the pendulum has swung too far
to one extreme.

Winnie
