Subject: SKIPPING OVER THE GREEN STOOLS PHASE

A doula client/friend's 6 day old baby was hospitalized for a bilirubin
level of 20.8, put under the lights for 12 hours and then discharged.
He was fully breastfed and made lots of green poops after the treatment
--no formula was given and poops had been yellow before the treatment.
My friend was told that her baby had "skipped over" the green poop stage
of day 3 and hadn't eliminated the bilirubin when he should have. The
baby did have a dry day and a half from day 2 -3 before I went for a
visit and helped with the latch, then had one meconium poop that night.
By the next morning, milk was in and baby was having yellow poops.

Did I miss something in my basic breastfeeding education? -- I didn't
think GREEN poops on day three were "necessary" to eliminating the
bilirubin. I recognize that the not-so-great nursing on days 1 and 2
was probably a risk factor for developing jaundice, but never thought
that if the poops weren't green before they turned yellow, that meant
the baby did not eliminate the bilirubin. Please elucidate for me, wise
ones.

Julie, LLLL in NJ
