Dear Friends:
Shabaan did a study in rural Egypt; women who received Depo-provera in the early postpartum had no problem with supply. Early postpartum in this study was defined as 8 (EIGHT) weeks; poor and rural Egyptian had no access to human milk substitutes, and their society expects long-term bf. (Koran says 2 years.)
The product insert says to wait for 6 weeks before administering Depo-provera. Giving it before then goes against manufacturer's recommendations and certainly would be evidence against giving it before hospital discharge on day 2 or 3!
Warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MS, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CIMI, CCE
