I have read through the HIPAA and marketing article and I am not sure how
this can help us.
It seems to have singled out "free formula" as OK.
I got really excited at the beginning when reading the definition of
marketing and then got to the Frequently Asked Questions and all my hopes
were dashed. It's almost like a double standard.
I work in a very "breastfeeding unfriendly" environment and was so hoping
this would help.
If I see one more poster for Lipil or Similac Advance I think I will scream.
Our Similac rep has even removed all the regular Similac from our stock and
all we have is the Advance.... at least the Enfamil rep left the regular
Enfamil.
Now we even have posters on the wall for the new "diaper bags" that Similac
Advance will be giving out.
It has become my goal in life to move these posters to inconvenient places
every shift I work even though they end up back in the same place a few
days later.
In some cases I have put a large breasfeeding promotion poster beside the
formula poster. In my workplace that is the best I can hope for at present.
I have argued with my manager that breastfeeding needs at least equal
exposure.
Any suggestions on how to use this HIPAA and marketing to help? I just
know when my manager reads it she will just say that formula bags are
covered and as I read it they seem to have made an exception for the
formula companies.
Linda
