Must be the weather butI am so angry I could scream! On and on we go about
the DHEA/ARA concerns. I hope that the news does follow through with this,
but I actually am more angry at the medical profession for abducating their
role in premature care.
My neonatologists looked at all the studies and info out there regarding
this and chose to not make it an "everybody" feeding for our premies on
formula or supplements. They would rather decide this on a case by case-
especially in infant with GI issues, etc. They were offended by one vendor
company who offered no choice in the matter and so stopped using that
companies premature formula. Now the other company is going the same route
and will no longer produce ANY preterm formula that will not contain
DHEA/ARA.
Now, this additive may later to be found well and good BUT, and I repeat
BUT,how can any medical professional, medical organization, or hospital
accept a VENDOR telling them they have absolutely no right to choose NOT to
use this? That they ( the medical profession) have no choice but to let the
premies and families trusting in their care be part of this grand market
testing? How can hospital risk management let a company get away with this
without informed consent? Especially since the FDA even states that
benefits are unsure at this time and the AAP committee on nutrition repeats
this.
I hope we all are wrong and that this stuff will be ok- otherwise the
consequences are frightening. So what of the premies that may show an
allergy to this product? What if, like usual, we medically start something
new in this very fragile population and find we have screwed up royally?
Remember Vit E? Peanut Oil additives? PO zinc? Etc, etc!
I hope for these families, that if any problems do develop, a very samrt
lawyer will institute a class action suit againt the medical professions
who have chosen to "roll over" and abducate their role as THE care
providers by leting vendors designate patient care. MAybe it will take a
class action suit against the AAP, AAFP, etc. for failure to maintain and
protect their responsibility as care providers to choose whether or not to
inculde patients under their care in test marketing such as this.
And no- spare the flames, I'm not anti Doc- most of my good friends and a
large part of my family are physicians and I have said the exact same
thing to them- problem is, while most agree and are concerned about this
development everyone is just adopting a wait and see mentality. Hope that
comforts any future families if problems do arise.
