Valerie has so rightly reminded us that serious adverse outcomes can and have
occurred with infant formula. NABA's web site lists all of the recalls and
market withdrawals of infant formula, www.naba-breastfeeding.org. There have
been recent ones for Enterobacter sakazakii, including standard formulas. If
you want your voice heard there is a meeting of the Contaminants and Natural
Toxicants Subcommittee of the FDA's Food Advisory Committee in Washington,
DC, March 18-19. The topic is Enterobacter sakazakii contamination in
powdered infant formula. The meeting is open to the public and they will
receive written or oral presentations. If you want to put in your two cents,
here is the opportunity.

The meeting was listed in the Federal Register on February 20, 2003, Vol 68,
No 34, pages 8299-8300. http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~lrd/fr030220.html. The
announcement gives instructions and more details. I agree with Valerie that
it is time to address these issues publicly, professionally, and with
evidence and documentation. Now is the time to speak up. This is the venue.
