I am not a translator or a writer, but often circumstances have caused me
to "fill in" in these situations, and I have learned a lot from doing them.

Currently we are dealing with an emergency health issue in our county, and
I have been recruited to translate some material into Spanish. This is
truly an emergency, or I would have insisted they use professional
translators - people with Masters Level and certificates.

However, as the material was being written in English at the same time I
was translating it, I was able to realize and point out how confusing the
English sentences were. You don't realize this until you try to say the
same thing - no not literally, but you still want to translate the
"feeling" and "tone" and not just the meaning of the words (when we were
working on the Womanly Art of Breastfeeding THIS was a real problem) - in
another language.

If you have material that you plan to have translated to other languages
and you have access to the translators, it may be helpful to work on it
together - we found the final copy made more sense in BOTH languages when
we collaborated from the beginning.
