Hi there. I would say that she could have used the All Purpose Nipple Cream
that Jack Newman MD advocates, described at www.breastfeedingonline.com.
And, I would not be sure that the latch is fine, from the sound of
things....it may look good, but can be actually not that great, especially
in light  of this type of damage. Was the baby tongue tied by any chance?
