This is in reply to the question about how long some one can stay on reglan.
In the past I have had several mothers stay on reglan or switch to
domperidon, for the first year or so of nursing. For the moms in question
they were either mothers who had had damage to the breasts or moms of
adoptive babies. One mom went on to breastfeed her twins after using this
med. While I am unclear how well things went in the long term for that
particular pregnancy, since she had already had several children by the time
the twins came along. I had worked with her for her first couple of
children.
She had had a reduction surgery when she was younger and her first nursing
experience had been difficult for a number of reasons, not the least of was
the reduction surgery. But with subsequent children she had chosen to stay
on the reglan for the entire nursing period well over a year because of the
surgery. She was able to supply about 90% of her infants needs.(NOT
necessarily the twins) I always questioned in my own mind if that could of
been a 100% if not for our fear of her not making enough. She was also on a
anti-depressants at the same time. Something she took anyway because of
other issues.
Another mother I worked with worked to induce lactation for a set of
surrogate twins, she had had numerous unsuccessful pregnancies , and two
very preterm infants. She had gotten domperidone and began taking it before
her infants were born. While it may not be available in the US it can be
purchased in Canada, or at a compounding pharmacy. I have seen it available
by the later here in Cincinnati.
I have also had experiences where it just didn't work at all.
