Another side of this thread: in the past two or three months, our local
area breastfeeding coalition has been told that TWO area hospitals, a
government hospital and our local Childrens hospital-have outright
abolished their "lactation programs", presumably by absorbing the RN-LC's
right on to the staff nursing assignments and ending their opportunity to
spend time doing strictly LC work and administering pump services.
Let's hope they taught the staff nurses well when they had the chance. I
doubt seriously it was because they worked themselves out of a job.
Bottom line - - -$$$$$$. Very discouraging to both LC's.
Penny wise, pound foolish in the long run it would seem. Clients are
individually reporting their disappointment already. Let's hope we as
local WIC LC's will be able to pick up some of the informational slack on
an outpatient basis.
